Deriving from the investigation of the unrealized opera Sagan om den Stora Datamaskinen (The Tale of the Big Computer), and more specifically, one particular piece of document called "Löpande Bandet"; a written list the composer Karl-Birger Blomdahl had made of sounds he wanted to record and use in the opera. These sounds were supposed to evoke the passage of time and the cultural and technological evolution.
”Conveyor Loop/Löpande Bandet” is an expansion of this list to also include sounds from our recent past and present. This list of sounds is performed as a silent concert, where the descriptions of sounds are displayed one by one, in order to trigger a play back sound from memory/imagination.
The durations, cuts and dissolves of the slides (as performed live) are recorded as sound wave frequencies on to a tape recorder connected to the slide projectors. The tape can then be played back into the projectors, functioning as an analog "computer program" which repeats the slideshow as an infinite loop.
First performed at Marian Spore Contemporary Art Museum and Collection, New York, November 2009, and shown as an ongoing installation as part of the Marian Spore collection until December 2010.
