ARTIST STATEMENT

Iʼd like to think of my work as having a rubber band connected between the smallest of constructions - such as cultural behaviors and agreements - and the big unanswered questions concerning the universe, time, life and death. Subjects seemingly far apart (when the rubber band is stretched all the way out) but which could get clashed together in an instant.

I observe, investigate, interpret and reconstruct social structures and phenomena in our society (our society being a relative term). I take interest in the rituals of the mundane - the obvious yet overlooked because of its common consent - proposing that art has a function to reveal these hidden dimensions. My practice is based on research, and my methodology is to find a method within the method, or rather, to not work in a set medium but to aim for a solution specific to the characteristics of the concept/idea/phenomenon I am investigating.

Trying not to be excluding, I want artworks to have recognition built in, referring to the reality and references which the subject matter and content of the artwork depend upon. By juxtaposing or extracting certain components, my aim is to create potential meta levels of meaning and reaction. In the interstices between the physical and the hypothetical, the artist and the audience/viewer/receiver/user can fight over the right to fill in the blanks.
